Protea Coin Foil Another Heist
September 15, 2009

Six robbers were gunned down as SAPS and Protea Coin Investigators foil a cash heist in Kameeldrift, Pretoria. "The members in "Buffalo 1" acted spot on by sticking to the SOP, resulting in these excellent results from the police," Mr Waal de Waal, DCOO of Protea Coin, stated.

On 14 September, around midday, Protea Coin members of another division spotted suspicious vehicles following one of the AIT cash vehicles. The members immediately contacted the Protea Coin control room, which at their turn phoned the police. The police's hi-tech unit, special task force and air wing were dispatched to the scene.

Mr Waal de Waal, and two of the VIP members, Lappies Labuschagne & Adrian Watkins, responded to the scene via helicopter as back-up for the Protea Coin cash vehicle. The MD, Albert Erasmus, and AIT investigators Vinol Viljoen and Carel van der Poll, also rushed to the scene by car.

About 2 km out on the Kemeeldrift road, towards the Baviaanspoort Prison on the Moloto Road, a black Volkswagen Polo and a White Nissan Sani bakkie tried to force the Protea Coin vehicle from the road by pulling up next to it and shooting at the wheels of the cash vehicle, as well as the guards. "The driver of the vehicle maintained calm and kept on driving. Police arrived on the scene as the suspects were firing at the cash vehicle. Officers met fire with fire..."

As the men launched attack on the officers, policemen armed with an assortment of high-powered weapons opened fire, forcing the gunmen to split in different directions. While the three suspects in the taxi escaped towards Kameelfontein, six others, who opened fire on the police, were killed. Police later on arrested the suspects in the taxi.

Four R5 rifles, four pistols and a shotgun were recovered from the scene.

Mr de Waal congratulated the members on a job well done. "We are proud to have members like these as part of the Protea Coin Group," he said. "It feels good to know we can count on our men!"

Mr Petrus van Niekerk (CEO of Protea Coin) also congratulated the South African police for the quick response.
