A man was arrested by Protea Coin Group security officers on 10 February 2010, after a spate of violent attacks on cyclists in the Pierre van Ryneveld and Irene areas.
After Mabala Mashigo (36) was arrested, it came to light that he was also wanted by the police for several housebreaking complaints in the Kempton Park area and a robbery in an open field outside Cornwall Hill Estates in August 2009.
Mr Waal de Waal’s (Deputy COO of Protea Coin Group) concern was raised after he received quite a few complaints about cyclists being attacked in an open field in Pierre van Ryneveld over a number of weeks. "In descriptions given by the victims, it was clear that there were two attackers. A short man as well as a tall gentleman with a scar on his face - which is how the suspect got his nickname 'Scarface'-," de Waal said.
The last attach took place earlier in Februarie 2010. De Waal and members of the community policing forum from Pierre van Ryneveld found a unique footprint after this attack, and took a few photos. He then decided to place Protea Coin Group officers on a hill on Wednesday evening between 16h00 and 18h00, close to where the attacks took place, to observe the environment.
"When the officers reached the top of the hill, the two suspects were sitting and waiting their next victim. They then started running in the direction of the Irene train station. I saw what was happening, and went ahead to wait for them in a field close to the train station," de Waal stated.
According to de Waal, he arrested Mahigo and took him to the place where the cyclists were attacked. The suspects shoe he was wearing at the time, perfectly matched the unique footprint found by Mr. de Waal and the rest of the community policing forum members.
Mashigo appeared in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Friday, 12 February 2010.
